Tiger did it again!

One of the biggest comebacks in sports or just in golf? Whatever you go for, Tiger’s 2019 Masters win will end up in sports history books as the triumphant comeback of a man who suffered so much pain, lost so much, changed so much and was pretty much absent from the game for so long.

He now came back with a great major tournament, The Masters supposedly one of his favorites, great touch, good drives and the luck of the Irish.

I take my hat and salute a great man, who went from idol and role model to pretty much the opposite—and back. Fingers crossed he’s feeling home again on the tournament circle and will spark some enthusiasm again, win again and will continue to write history and lead a new generation of golfers to take care of this beautiful sport and its future.

A big ask, I know… But the 2 million dollars he went home with may be a kind of compensation – not that he would need it…

Jordan Spieth: our new Masters champion

We have a new Masters champion!

Jordan Spieth, the 21-year old kid from Texas took the lead at the Masters and wouldn’t let go till the very end. In an interesting Sunday battle he played like from another planet and managed to maintain his 5-shot lead till the 18th green.

While Spieth played so many birdies in this week than never before and at some point stood at 19-under which hasn’t been achieved yet it has been the other players who struggled and really failed to close the gap between them and Spieth.

Phil Mickelson had a great Sunday but even his brilliant short game didn’t help him out. Spieth’s was excellent as well. Dustin Jordan at least on Saturday seemed to be in a position to get closer to the top spot, but at some point it was obvious that he wouldn’t manage to stop the kid’s walk of fame. Tiger Woods’ game seemed to be completely out of control. On Sunday the first fairway he managed to hit was the 13th! Seriously: one—three! He was excellent in recovery shots though and he might even got his feeling back to get back into contention at a major. This was interrupted on the 9th when he injured himself hitting some hard ground under a tree (because he missed the fairways…). Justin Rose was very close but lost track on the second half. And Rory, yes Rory wasn’t in the best form either. He played well, had some fantastic shots but didn’t manage to bring down the numbers.

So it was Jordan Spieth who eventually dropped the last putt on the 18, hugged family and friends and was provided with the one and only piece of attire that every golfer is longing for: the green jacket at Augusta National.

Fun fact: watching the price giving ceremony later, you realised that Spieth so far very rarely put on proper jackets apparently. He had some troubles getting into the jacket with his arms all over the place and ended up not very gentleman-like saying “a little sweaty”, and smiled. What can you say… 21 years!

You have to really like this guy though. He played finest golf, tamed the beast Augusta National which seemed to be a bit easier this year but still is a heck of a golf course. And I don’t know why but this year I somehow realised the huge elevation changes on TV for the first time. That absolutely impressed me, it doesn’t even seem easy to walk the course, not talking about placing balls one metre next to the hole.

Really a very interesting Masters tournament this year! I’m ready for the other majors this year and I’m sure Jordan Spieth won’t be a one hit wonder!

The most interesting Thursday of a Masters Tournament for a long time

HIG_20150410_425855555643_15masters_Thursday_Evening_Highlights_FINAL_1280x720

Yesterday I was—like so many others—watching the first day of the 2015 Masters Tournament on television, witnessing Ernie Els’ great round, Tiger’s weird shots, Jason Day’s great back nine and Jordan Spieth’ amazing performance.

It was really a pleasure to watch him; awesome approaches, great putts, fantastic recovery shots. All that seemed so easy and in the end he was one shot short of the Augusta National course record, as he carded a 64. Brilliant performance by the 21-year old! Can’t wait to see the rest of the tournament. When the weekend turns out to be as exciting as the Thursday, then I guess we are quite some lucky guys.

It’s Masters week

Folks, don’t try to disturb me during the next four days. But as I’m sure you’re spending the time exactly like me, I’m not expecting any trouble.

Kidding aside, the next couple of days will be probably the most important in golf in 2015: the first major of the year, the Masters, the holy grail of golf, bringing out legends, living traditions and catering for unlimited stories to be told.

I just can’t wait to see the first ball fly! Unfortunately I have to work Thursday/Friday but I hope to see lots of golf in the evening and night hours as I’m watching from Central Europe. On Saturday I’ll play a round on my own in the morning and then head back home in front of the telly. Sunday pretty much the same thing, spending time with the wifey in the morning, then later spending time with the Masters, the golf masters.

May the best man win! Frankly, I’ve put on some online wagers. As I couldn’t decide on one guy only, I’ve spread my money across four heads. We’ll see if that’s successful or not. Rory McIlroy being one of them, I just want to see him succeed winning the career slam at his age.

For all of you, enjoy the weekend, give your partner a big kiss and ask for absolute silence in order to purely concentrate on golf. And don’t forget to return the favour!

Tiger got his smile back

Not only are all his teeth where they used to be, Tiger seems to be pain-free, back in shape and willing to make a statement at the Masters this year.

Over the last years Tiger here and there dropped out of tournaments for various reasons; knee problems, back problems and sometimes most likely swing problems as well. For some people out there Tiger’s explanations afterwards sounded like nothing but excuses.

Undoubtedly he was in pain sometimes and wasn’t in the form he used to be and although we all wish him luck and a good game, it’s Tiger himself who most likely will hate the fact the most that he’s not good enough anymore currently to be in contention to win a tournament, a “normal” PGA Tour tournament that is.

Just recently Tiger fell out of the top 100 world ranking list and we all may believe that he’d like to have that changed again. This man is pure golf passion, he basically lived for nothing but this sport. He will give everything necessary to be part of the big guys club again. We will see in the following days whether that plan plays out or not.

One interesting quote from today’s the press conference: “My biggest motivation? Winning!… I like it!” with that huge smile on his face.

This week’s gonna be so interesting!

Career Slam in sight! Can Rory make it happen?

Rory McIlroy is a golf phenomenon, no doubt about it. Just like Tiger Woods, Rory is a young gun and already dominates golf and rightly is one of the hot picks for a Masters win this year. There have been years when he struggled, sometimes he even struggled very much but currently he seems in shape, and that’s not only referring to his fitness but more to his recent ball striking.

If Rory could turn that around and win the Masters he would achieve what commonly is referred to as a “Career Slam”, winning all four majors during the golfing career. Winning all in one year would be the “Grand Slam” and I’m pretty sure he will go out and try exactly that this year. 15 years ago Tiger Woods managed to win four consecutive majors, not in one calendar year though: three tournaments in 2000 and the Masters in 2001. This achievement was later called “Tiger Slam”.

Rory McIlroy won the US Open in 2011, the PGA Championship in 2012 and in 2014 he won both the Open and the PGA Championship. So he’s only short the Masters win to write another chapter in golf history.

We keep our fingers crossed, young man!

Heart-warming: The official Masters Theme Song

Luckily it’s the time of the year again and with The Masters just around the corner we all can’t wait for the TV coverage about the biggest tournament in the year at one of the most exclusive and prestigious clubs in the world.

The Masters is special in so many aspects and it just fits that even for the video footage The Masters has its own theme song. That’s so super cool!

So listen to the song, imagine you walk along the rolling fairways and you see your favourite player win. Whoever that is, I keep my fingers crossed that you’ll enjoy The Masters exactly so much like me. For those who have the chance to go there as a Patron, have the fun of your life chaps! All the others watch and listen to the theme song to get in the mood!

Shots that made history at The Masters

When you are like me, you soak in every minute of a major tournament sitting in front of the telly, trying not to waste a moment with conversation with your partner, a call with mum, a walk to the fridge and so forth. You just enjoy the game.

If that’s the case, then this is something for you. The Masters is not far anymore and I’m sure they are already pretty busy organising everything necessary. I can’t wait for the 2015 edition of this prestigious tournament and I’m absolutely looking forward to 4 great days.

To always remember the biggest shots of Masters history you should watch this video.

The Masters weekend 2.0

I know what you’re thinking right now: “Please don’t tell me how you sat on the couch and watched the golf, mate!” And that’s a fair point as (1) basically there’s not much to explain how to watch telly, (2) watching golf in general is a no-go for many non-golfers out there but (3) this Masters was a bit special. Let me start from the beginning.

Masters week starts on Monday: You know there’s a big event coming up on the weekend you have to prepare for – even if you’re not attending on-site. I was telling my mates and my GF that I won’t be available on Sat/Sun due to heavy golf watching. As expected this resulted in a discussion with my GF later in the week but hey, it was worth it. In addition there are other important things to organise: food for instance, drinks, snacks and last but not least: technical equipment.

What I mean with that is to make sure your tech setup is up and running. Next to a fast internet connection that obviously includes updates of the official Masters iPad and iPhone apps, a Twitter update and making sure all devices are properly charged to cope with enduring usage.

All right, the tournament officially starts on Thursday (like most of them) but there’s a lot of stuff going on the days before. Pro-Am, Kids Day, Par-3 contest and so forth. All of it not very important by all means but one might want to watch some videos of that as well to get in the right Masters mood, watching the spectators (called patrons) wandering the beautiful green hills back and forth. So I tried to check that from time to time as well. It wasn’t really working since I had a tough week in the office and couldn’t really find the time to check things on the web. So Thursday was the day when I was planning to have the Masters website on standby the whole day and I wanted to check back on a regular basis in the afternoon but apparently there was an issue either on their side or on mine in regards to IT as there was no working leaderboard on the Masters site. As a result I had to rely on my iPhone and BlackBerry  internet connection from time to time or check the PGA Tour website for that purpose. Back home at night, first thing to do: looking for live streams to watch it live on the laptop. Normally not a tough thing to do as I’m not a SKY subscriber and did this live stream thing more often. But on that particular Thursday I couldn’t find a running stream. Either my line was too slow or the stream was rubbish, in the end I haven’t really watched a minute… You can imagine my anger!

Friday. Working long hours and then literally jumping back home, looking for the same live stream page, finding it, opening the stream, clicking away all the adverts, closing all the windows that opened and then enjoying hours of golfing fun… well watching golf on a laptop screen in crap quality but at least 1000% better than Thursday without any golf! And it was brilliant! With Tiger and the discussions around his false drop, which have lead to a massive amount of discussions on Twitter, Facebook and in the blogs. I really couldn’t come after all that and struggled to put my own thoughts on Twitter and watch the golf at the same time. I was tweeting like crazy (at least for my means).

Saturday, moving day. The weekend… no work, no further disturbance and two brilliant days of 40 inch HD golf heaven on BBC ahead. So basically time to replenish food, drinks and snacks. And I had a BBQ at a friend’s to which I went – wearing my Titleist cap of course. Back at home, on time for the BBC coverage to start, I made myself comfy on the couch arranged the tech equipment and was about to drill into the most important golf week in the year.

The setup I’m talking about is the following: TV as described (remote controlled for maximum comfort), an iPad to my left showing the current Masters leaderboard, an iPhone to my right for handy access to Masters videos (and GF’s calls) plus a Macbook on my lap for checking/writing tweets on the fly.

I have to admit, it’s a massive information overflow, and by the end of Saturday night I switched off the iPad and neglected the iPhone (including GF… no just kidding). But what a brilliant golf day that was! To follow Jason Day, Bernhard Langer, Adam Scott, Brandt Snedeker and all the others virtually around the course was big fun. And tweeting about it was too. Hardly anyone commented on my tweets though, which was starting to annoy me.

Sunday. Again, long sleep, relaxation and preparation time for the big day! Leaving iPad and iPhone switched off and I tried to not look at any tweets this day. Didn’t work out in the end but it was a very good golf-watching day with an exciting end. And believe me or not, I really like Adam Scott and in my opinion he so much deserves it. I definitely cheered for him and went to bed late after great joy and excitement thoughout the past days.

Next morning in the office, a colleague: “Anything special on the weekend?” – (me lying) “Nah, not much, BBQ on Saturday, weather was good” …. yeah, whatever! :)

it’s masters time!
