Brexit is done…

…and you can think or lean towards which side you want, leave or remain, your choice, but you all have to agree that it’s going to be and look weird when in a couple of months time, 12 Europeans, including English, Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish will enter the stage under the European flag, walking the arena to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 as the Anthem of Europe, waiving blue-yellow flags and telling reporters how proud they are to play and compete for their continent.

European continent that is, not the European Union – rocking the same flag though.

Ryder Cup 2020 apparel released

Today I learned that the Ryder Cup 2020, staged at Whistling Straits, will have the European players wear once again a Scottish brand as official team apparel.

I don’t want to be too critical about it, but I can remember some despicable and pathetic team wear in recent events that were really, I mean REALLY, embarrassing! Diarrhea brown and puke green colors come to my mind…

This time a company called Sunderland got the big contract for the technical golf wear. Sunderland belongs to the Glenmuir brand which also outfitted the past events and again is an official licensee for the 2020 Ryder Cup as far as polos and knitted products go. The five year agreement will see the brand appointed for the 2020, 2022 and 2024 matches.

Glenmuir’s success story and close collaboration with the Ryder Cup began in 1987 with Tony Jacklin as team captain of the Europeans. Since then it’s the longest-running partnership between a clothing brand and a sports event.

The technical products in the Sunderland 2020 collection all look very cool and of high quality. Let’s cross fingers that the actual athletes are equipped with equally good looking stuff (and colors). I still have my doubts.

Longing for Adare Manor

Truth be told, I never had the chance to play golf in Ireland. I’ve been there couple of times, mostly for business, but never was able to squeeze in some golf. I know… shame on me.

When I think about golf in Ireland I’m dreaming about lush green fairways, great hospitality and a fantastic experience eventually. What I do however picture (for some reason) are links courses such as the typical suspects Old Head, Tralee, Lahinch, Waterville, Doonbeg, Ballybunion, just to name a few.

Obviously with that I don’t do justice to all the great courses which are indeed inland courses. The famous K Club comes to mind, and not to forget, Adare Manor.

While Adare might have been a tad more under the radar than others, this is absolutely about to change very soon, if not already happened recently. Adare Manor was officially chosen to stage the 2026 Ryder Cup! And what an event to start with.

The venue, golf course and hotel complex, was opulently renovated in 2017. It’s an original Robert Trent Jones Snr. design and was reconstructed and renovated by Tom Fazio and is since then equipped with all the modern aspects and technology golf has to offer. While the setting by the 18th century manor house and the park-style routing suggests something else, the course boasts state-of-the-art technology, for example SubAir systems, the first ever course in Irland to use that.

Fazio commented: “Most golfers will never have seen anything like this course. It looks and plays like no other course in Ireland. This will be a stand out course in Europe and, with the Adare Manor house and estate as its setting, will be one of the finest stay and play venues ever created.”

Looking at the pictures taken from the Adare website, don’t tell me you’re not falling in love with this place. I am most definitely. I seriously can’t wait to play there and review everything one day, hopefully before the Ryder Cup is foreshadowed in a couple of years.

So I’m waiting for that invitation—just saying! :)

The 2026 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor will be absolutely mind blowing

Very recently it was announced that the 2026 Ryder Cup (and yes that’s a long way to go) will be staged at Adare Manor in west Ireland. Despite the fact that I’ve been to Ireland a couple of times already, I’ve never played golf there. It was mostly work and one buddy trip from London, but golf was never an option.

I remember that I’ve seen all these lads with golf travel cases at Dublin airport and said to myself “I want that, too!”. So golf in Ireland has been on my bucket list for quite a while, especially the south-west is something that I’d like to tick off that list rather sooner than later. Apart from these legendary courses such as Ballybunion, Waterville, Lahinch, Tralee, Doonbeg, Old Head etc. there are others in other parts of the island, like Portmarnock, European Club, the K Club and alike that I had on my list.

I did not have Adare Manor on it, and truth be told, I have no idea why not. The property (hotel and course) was fully renovated in 2017, so I reckon it has to do with the fact that the golf course changed quite dramatically in the recent past. But I wasn’t prepared to see such beauty when somebody told me Adare Manor will host the Ryder Cup.

I investigated quite a bit since then and can officially agree that it’s one of the worthiest places to host the pan-Atlantic tournament everybody is so much longing for.

But see for yourself.

I hope to play here before 2026 in order to give you a more personal view rather than just showing you a professionally produced resort video, which I have to admit is pretty cool indeed.

Fell in love all over again. Damn.

Darren Clarke named as Europe’s captain for 2016 Ryder Cup

The Europeans usually take a bit longer and today’s announcement was long awaited. The Northern Irish Darren Clarke will captain the European Team at the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine National GC, Minnesota, USA.

Clarke obviously is over the moon after the official confirmation by the Euro Ryder Cup committee. The Europeans were really strong on the last occasions and he will definitely feel the pressure to continue with the success.

The Americans will most likely announce Davis Love III to captain the US team.

Back in action

Jeez, that's a lot of hand rotation! #ForeLeft

A post shared by Golficiency (@golficiency) on

Folks, I’m back in action, back from honeymoon, 3.5 weeks of pure relaxation and a bit of golf. The time in Mauritius has been absolutely amazing. The weather could have been a bit better, but the hotels, the beaches and the people couldn’t be beaten.

A lot has happened during my absence: Europe won the Ryder Cup, Oliver Wilson won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, the US Ryder Cup team were ripping their captain’s heart out and many tiny other golf related things as well.

I was fortunate to see a bit of the Ryder Cup, but won’t dig into that issue anymore here on this blog. I’m happy the Euro boys won in style on home turf and that everybody had his stake in this beautiful team event. I can’t wait for 2016!

In Mauritius I played three lovely rounds of golf, which I really enjoyed. I will write a post on each day in the course of the following days. So keep in touch, more interesting stuff and pictures to come.

Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup, Rose Cup

Golficiency officially campaigns for an inaugural Rose Cup, a new team cup between European and International golf professionals. This new tournament should close the gap between the continents as the golf world already stages the Ryder Cup, the Presidents Cup but no established competition between Europeans and Internationals.

The Ryder Cup is just around the corner and unfortunately I won’t see a lot of the action because I’ll be on honeymoon during that time—bad timing. The missus won’t be amused if I’d ask her if she’d mind me watching some golf instead of spending some time with her at the beach estate in Mauritius and to be honest, I’m pretty much looking forward to that too. We’ve scheduled in some rounds of golf for ourselves but watching golf on TV is off the table I’m afraid.

Even though I will miss most of the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, I strongly admire that golf tournament setup and the idea behind it. Being invented and established in 1927 by Samuel Ryder, the Cup always attracted so many people, both on and off the course. Players even today play for free, they just earn a lot of respect for taking the field for their continent. For them it’s like the Olympic Games in which athletes feel pride in playing their beloved sport for their nation, for their colours in a team uniform. But also spectators love the team cups as they are played in match play which offers them the chance to support a team rather than only cheering for a single player’s birdies. So it’s a great event for both sides, players and spectators, and it attracts so many TV viewers as well which makes the Ryder Cup the third biggest sports media event in the world (after the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup)!

It’s difficult to describe the atmosphere of the tournament, but I’m sure you have seen some TV footage, something like the overwhelmed jumps of joy, the excitement of players after winning a hole or a point, the crowd going totally nuts following their team around the course or just the great spirit within the team. All this you usually don’t see in regular golf at all—a sport in which everybody fights on his own, where ethusiasm is rather calm and short and where a team is only a player and his caddy. This is so different in golf team cups like the Ryder Cup or the Presidents Cup. There real teams fight for the pride and the success of their continent and leave all individual goals behind.

In the Ryder Cup Europe plays against the United States, e.g. players like McIlroy, Kaymer, Poulter, Stenson or McDowell are facing guys like Woods, Mickelson, Furyk, Watson, Mahan or Fowler. The clash of European and US titans one could argue… The Presidents Cup on the other hand is the battle between the US boys and an international team excluding the Europeans. Amongst these you’ll find golf stars like Scott, Day, Els, Schwartzel, Cabrera or Matsuyama.

So we have three great teams but only two tournaments as there is no team cup between the Europeans and the international team! This has to change now!! I really want to see Martin Kaymer playing match play against Adam Scott, and I’d like to see Rory McIlroy winning a point for Europe against Ernie Els—all accompanied by huge crowds, extensively cheering for their team.

This is where the Rose Cup comes into play. I officially campaign for the implementation of the Europe vs International team cup and as the tournament usually is named after its inventor, I believe “Rose Cup” is a more than suitable brand name :) I already see the breathtaking trophy in my mind’s eye—with a huge silver rose on top… ok, this is open for discussion ;)

“As you walk down the fairway of life, you must smell the roses, for you only get to play one round.”
(Ben Hogan)

I could be very wrong here but I believe the world deserves an additional golf team cup, another chance to shine as a continent and to play golf on highest professional level at the best golfing venues in the world. Most likely South Africa and Australia would make up the most players in the international team but as these two countries brought up great and proud golf enthusiasts I’m sure there would be many supporters of this idea, both in Europe and elsewhere.

What’s your opinion on this? I say let’s make this viral, let’s breed this idea, let’s come to a point in which the need for such recurring event hits the media and attracts many people around the world wishing the same, crossing fingers for the budgeting, support and finally the implementation of the new cup which lets the best European and international teams hit the majestic golf ground of our time.

I’d be more than delighted if you would support this idea. Please comment, share your thoughts and impress with your own ideas if you want. Let the games begin.
